Tetris Couldn't Win at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification May Address This Issue

As any prominent awards ceremony draws close, there’s always a demand for the addition additional classifications to recognize unsung work and fill the hearts of fans with niche passions.

My colleague previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are tabletop games, representing a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward just as with other blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification for why my demand remains most pressing above others. Here's the proposal: There should be a category for puzzle games.

Categorizing Game Types

Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and inevitably start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that movie academies avoid this approach. Yet it remains a necessary evil within the realm of video games, which are so diverse they hardly constitute a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.

Existing Game Classification System

The major gaming awards offer these genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these classifications successfully include a lot of ground, allowing placement for most games within them.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Think about these recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges of one title, intense tile-matching in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. What category would fit them between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.

The Representation Problem

There are dozens excellent brain-teasers released every year without proper recognition in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive Indie races.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated completely during that awards season
  • Another creative title missed out during that ceremony
  • Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment recently
  • Just some puzzle games barely qualified for independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent compact experiences, however the design of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among most popular titles in the world continuing this trend for many years.

The iconic tile-matching title competes with well-known building titles competing to become most purchased experience; it also contends as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.

Proposal and Rationale

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. It would be easy to populate a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these are games lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers operate at the demanding boundary game development, producing among most fundamental forms of the video game form. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay decades.
