A recent study suggests that people who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional lifestyle programs.
Published data in a prominent medical journal shows that while obese individuals often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Individuals purchasing these treatments need to be cognizant of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain suggests a reversion to starting weight within about 18 months.
Weighing Therapies
The study, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with other pills.
Scientists note that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually experience a more gradual creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Understanding the Rapid Rebound
Nutrition scientists propose the mechanism of the drugs is key to understanding the accelerated regain.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than normal might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Stopping of this medication leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating much more probable."
An Ongoing Issue?
Medical guidelines recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals contend that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy should be considered life-long.
This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "emphasize the long-term character of obesity," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Patient Experiences
Individuals who have stopped the medication describe a sudden resurgence of cravings.
"I experienced something activating and you become starving," said an individual.
This difficulty is exacerbated if patients have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Significant Adoption
Survey data indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.
- Use is greater among females than males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
In conclusion, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success hinges on ongoing behavioural changes.
