No fewer than 13 passengers killed and 98 wounded in train derailment in Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's key public works projects.

The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line developed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.

“We will thoroughly investigate the cause of this tragedy,” stated the national leader.

The president confirmed that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The president noted plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the immediate past president, whose term finished the previous year. This rail line was a hallmark of his government's economic goals for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Project Execution and Worries

The construction of both train projects was overseen by the army, marking a significant expansion of its role in national works. They were completed at an fast-tracked rate, beating predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently raised persistent questions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an earlier collision this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had several non-fatal derailments.

Calls for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a major opposition party urged an urgent pause in the development and management of all similar projects.

This halt was requested until the completion of a full independent investigation. The party declared that the tragedy "calls for swift accountability."

In reply, the head of state insisted that the train had been operating in complete adherence to all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the construction and management of these national projects.
