RAF Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French warplanes in a joint strike against an underground arms cache in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, according to the British defence ministry.

The site, located using reconnaissance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was located in mountains just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a series of entry passages down to the facility... early reports suggest the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the attack late on Saturday and every plane involved returned safely, the MoD added.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced extremist governance over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action shows the UK's leading role, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eliminate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey said.

UK warplanes have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State subsequent to its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank every member of our armed forces participating in this strike for their expertise and their valour," he added. "They were part of thousands of British troops stationed over the holidays. This operation, to eliminate terrorist threats who endanger our security, highlights how UK forces are ready to step up, all year round, keeping Britain secure domestically and strong abroad."

In December, the United States armed forces conducted what it called a "massive strike" against Islamic State objectives in Syria, after an ambush resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN estimates IS still has roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Syria and Iraq.
